Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to another of our online chats leading up to the vote on May 2nd. Today's guest is Kitchener-Conestoga Conservative candidate Harold Albrecht. Welcome, Harold! And based on the number of questions already in the queue, I'm going to step aside and let Harold get to work. Let's begin!
I firmly believe that we need to provide the best equipment to our men and women in uniform. They need the best to do their job well and to be sure that they return home safely. they were sent to Afghanistan without proper equipment, we cannot let this happen again.
all parties are investing in Post Secondary Education and we are committed to increasing that. The major difference in our approach is that Conservative Government was first to invest heavily in the Community Colleges, this will have a huge impact on applied research and job skills for trades
I'm not sure why Harold's picture is not appearing today. Sorry about that. In order to fix it, we'd have to get him to log out and sign in again. Because we have so many questions already today, I'm not going to ask him to do that. So please take me at my word. Harold is sitting immediately to my left, typing furiously! I gave him the "less is more" advice today. We'll get to your question soon.
i have met with hundreds of students in my term as MP, I enjoy engaging with elementary, secondary and post secondary students. We have implemented leadership awards to recognize leadership potential in the graduating classes of Gr 5, 6, 8, 12. I also have a number of youth volunteering in my campaign.
It is important to work towards fair # of Federal jobs in various areas of Canada. The Federal Economic Development Agency has located here in KW and is a great start to address this issue
This election should not be happening now. Our government went to great lengths to engage voters all across Canada to get input for our Budget. We engaged local municipal leaders, (Zehr, Seiling, Keltorborn and other municipal leaders, as well as manufacturing sector, education sector social service agencies) and the budget reflects many of the concerns that NDP and Bloc raised. The Liberals refused to have any input and BEFORE the budget was even read,-- Decided to Oppose it! that is not the kind of study Canadians deserve and expect.
Our proposal is to allow families with children 18 or under
to split income between spouses. When the budget is balanced (2014-15) the higher income earner can transfer up to $50,000 to the lower income spouse - this will result in significantly lower tax burden. Conservatives believe that moms and dads need to be making the decisions regarding their childrens care, this is one more way we are giving parents the flexibility to make the choice that is right for them
I am happy to engage in the issues that are key to my riding - I have always engaged with immigrants and new Canadians in many forums including attending dozens of New Citizens ceremonies and welcoming them to my office for small receptions were they meet other new Canadians and my staff.
I have enjoyed living in this riding for over 60 years and know the urban and rural communities well. I have attended hundreds of events which has given me a unique perspective on the issues facing my constituents. After May 3 I will live in the riding whether I win or lose. I have the very best riding in all of Canada.
It is unfortunate that this is his view of good representation. I could not care less whether or not a camera is present when I show up to cheer on a great community group that is doing good work to make our area even better
I do always take the views of my constituents into consideration. However, there are key issues which go beyond simply polling my constituents on which I will always vote my conscience. I always have an "open door" to receive input from constituents.
The matter of costs was referred to The Procedure and House affairs cttee. The issue was studied, the information requested was given, in fact the opposition stated it was now too much information. We tried at every turn to address their request, but the bottom line is that they had pre-judged the outcome long before the cttee even met. it was simply a matter of being outvoted by the larger #s of opposition members on the ctee, who were acting as a Coaltion.
Harold seems determined to establish a new record for questions answered during one of these chats. If you're keeping track, that record is 26. :)
Plenty of great questions today, though, so I won't interrupt for long. Our next question comes from Brian.
Brian, thanks for the great question. Ever since we enjoyed the new team members from Kitchener Centre and KW We have always worked as a TEAM to improve the lot of all of Region of Waterloo residents. I am proud of the accomplishments of our team -- investments in IQC, U of W,.Conestoga College, LRT, Highway 8 improvements etc. If we are going to continue delivering these kinds of results for KW area, we need a great Team Member like Stephen Woodworth to continue representing Kitchener Centre.
There is no question that lower corporate business taxes encourage investment by companies that want to locate here. When companies expand or locate here for the first time, it will mean more jobs for local constituents. We also are providing other incentives for businesses to improve their efficiency - by accelerated Capital Cost Allowance, this enables them to invest in more modern efficient equipment. what is interesting in regards to Corporate tax rates-- is that the Liberal Ontario Government led by Dalton McGuinty and Dwight Duncan ALSO favour lowering corporate tax rates
I have had many people express their displeasure with all so called attack ads. the big difference with this particular negative ad by the Liberals is that they are actually making up a quote and attributing it to PM Harper. This goes beyond any acceptable level of fair play. our ads are of Mr Ignatitieff's own words. He may like to disown those words now that he is seeking to be PM, but they are his words none
I enjoy Gardening. we have a large vegetable garden, and raise much of our food, - raspberries, popcorn, beans, peas, watermelon, sweetcorn etc. I was sure the Leafs would win the Stanley cup-- As I remember well their last win in 1967. Oh well --- Next Year. at least this year we have a Canadian team that will go all the way - Vancouver!
Our Government is committed to continuing the 6% annual increase in transfer payments to provinces. we will NOT cut $25B from transfers to provinces as the Liberal party did in the mid 90s. My opponent says that a 6% increase will result in a two tier system. this is hard to comprehend as this proposal of 6% increase is the exact same proposal as the Liberal platform. In addition we are committing to give $8000 per year in loan forgivenes to Medical Graduates who practice in remote areas of Canada
We are facing our 4th election in 7 years. It is time for a stable National Government. The risk of a coalition is far to great for Canada. I believe that coaltion Governments can and do work-- However a coaltion that is totally dependent on the Bloc for support is far too great a risk. Bloc MPs are not committed to the betterment of Canada, in fact they want to break up our great country. They even refuse to sing our National anthem! We need to Stand on Guard for Canada! May God keep Canada Glorious and Free!
Andrew has always been divisive in his approach to many issues. He takes great pride in opposing even his own party. Peter Braid in contrast is a master bridge builder. Immigration suppport has never been higher than with our current government. The Liberals allowed our immigration backlog to grow from 50,000 to over 800,000 with wait times longer than 5 years. We have welcomed refugees in record numbers, and reduced the landing fee by 50% Immigrants have built this country, and continue to make very positive contributions to all segments of society especially here in KW.
It was said because Andrew is desperate.
If we have not yet had a chance to get to your question, I'm sorry. Believe me when I say that Harold has been flying through them as quickly as he can. This might be a good time for me to (shamelessly) remind you that our televised debate (in partnership with Rogers TV) featuring Kitchener-Conestoga airs this Thursday night at 7 PM. You'll hear it on 570 News and can watch it live on Rogers TV, Cable 20.
For now, I must sound the 10-minute warning.
The agricultural community in Kitchener-Conestoga is a very important part of our cultural, environmental and economic fabric. Farmers need to have a level playing field in terms of regulations. We have opened markets for Beef, Pork, Grain in many of our new free trade agreements. Canadian Farmers can produce very high quality food at affordable prices and all they ask for is fair play. Canadian farmers are not eager to "farm the mailbox"
I was troubled as well, and immediately expressed my displeasure and disapproval. I asked the individual to discontinue the redirection of the site, AND to offer the return of the domain to the Rosehart campaign. He has made this offer
I think this reflects poorly on politics, --
but Mr Rosehart himself has said we need to move on - I agree
Thanks for the great questions today, everyone, and sorry for those we just couldn't get to. As you can see, Harold was very busy today! Before we let him go, any final thoughts?
Thanks to all of you for the great questions. I love representing this great riding and hope to do so for many more years! On May 2, please make sure that you vote, in fact, why not get out this weekend and take advantage of the advance polls? Thanks Again for the new experience of answering online.
Thanks again, Harold. And to all of you for the questions! Be sure to join us again tomorrow when our guest is Kitchener-Centre Conservative candidate Stephen Woodworth.
