The travel and being away from family.
The country needs parliamentary reform. Also, the role of an MP to represent their riding must be enhanced. Kitchener-Waterloo deserves an MP who will fight for them in Ottawa and not be a mere messenger from the Prime Minister's office to the riding. An MP must see all of his or her constituents regardless of whether they supported him or her in the election.
While there is much to commend about both of those parties and I agree with much of their platforms, this was the closest race in the entire country last election. The Conservative won by 17 votes. The Conservatives have nothing in common with the NDP and Green platforms and the Liberals are in the best position to defeat the Conservatives here. Democracywatch.com and Catch-22 both say that to defeat the Conservatives, the Liberals are the best option.
I am a past president of the Federation of Students, a member of the University of Waterloo Senate, a member of the Board of Governors at WLU, and I was chair of a community advisory board at Conestoga College. I was one of the initiators of Communitech and I was their promoter in Ottawa. Unlike the incumbent, I will fight to protect Canadian taxpayer-funded intellectual property so our Canadian companies can have a fair chance to bid on them.
By replacing Stephen Harper with Michael Ignatieff, who Foreign Policy magazine called one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world.
Stephen Harper is like a schoolyard bully who has isolated himself. He needs a time out. I have a long record of co-operating with MPs from other parties and working with them on behalf of Canadians.
Education. Education. Education. Education.
The Liberals established Medicare across this country and fought Conservatives in doing so. Before he became Prime Minister, Stephen Harper headed the National Citizens Coalition, an organization founded with the sole initial purpose of destroying public health care. You can't have the fox guard the hen house. I believe in 100% public, single-tier health care and the Liberals have committed to maintaining steady 6% funding increases for health care.
You are mistaken. Crime rates are going down. For safe secure communities, we have to be smart on crime. I agree with our local crime prevention council that we should fight crime through social development. The case of Ashley Smith clearly demonstrates the validity of the prevention model. People with mental health problems should not be warehoused in prisons. The Conservative plans to spend $13 billion on US-style mega-prisons is both immoral and a waste of funds that could be better used for Canadian families.
We've just passed the halfway point of this chat and already established a new record for questions answered. It's a fine line between answers that are too long (as we heard yesterday) and too short (as some are saying today). We're learning on the fly in this new, high tech forum that we're using for the first time here at 570 News. The good news in today's chat is that, with the speed at which Andrew is posting answers, most if not all questions will get a reply. Please be patient if we haven't gotten to your question yet. I'm confident we will and please keep them coming!
It took a Liberal government to restore fiscal integrity after a record $42 billion deficit left by the Mulroney Conservatives and leave Harper a $13 billion surplus when he took over. It will take a Liberal government once again to eliminate our current $52 billion deficit.
You are wrong on the iPod tax.
We do not need untendered stealth fighters. Google Peter Worthington, a conservative columnist at the Toronto Sun with a military background, for more information on how money for these extravagant jets would take away from much needed military equipment
Kitchener-Waterloo is an urban riding. It consists of the City of Waterloo and the northern portion of the City of Kitchener. Both urban and rural issues are important to all Canadians.
We only have one planet and we must do our utmost to protect it. All of us must reduce our carbon footprint. I bought twice the required amount of carbon offsets for my campaign to make up for our local Conservative candidate who refused to buy any.
We've reached our 10-minute warning. Given the pace at which Andrew is providing responses today, I'll ask him to take 5 more questions
before we move onto closing comments for this afternoon.
We restored money for both the military and health care under Martin. We reached the unprecedented 10-year health accord with the provinces and revitalized the Canadian military. Read Rick Hillier's autobiography for his praise of Martin.
My policy is that every consitutent has the right to see me regardless of whether they supported me, unlike the current member.
Unlike some members, my thinking evolves. When the courts ruled that this was a Charter question, I supported it without reservation.
The Liberal Family Pack will make a real difference to the lives of ordinary Canadians. $1,000 to $1,500 a year for students will help thousands of young people achieve post-secondary education. I urge you to visit liberal.ca for more information on our platform. Also, I'm in the best position to defeat the Harper Conservatives in Kitchener-Waterloo. For more information about that, please visit democracywatch.com and Catch-22.

Thanks very much to everyone for participating in what has been our most active chat to date. I'm sorry for the questions we couldn't get to but, as you can see by scrolling through this transcript, Andrew did provide some 40 responses today. Unfortunately, we've run up against the clock. Before we let you go, Andrew, any final thoughts?
Remember our democracy is precious. People are dying around the world for the right to a free vote to elect a government of your choice. Instead of the record low turnout in the last election, let's make this a record high turnout! All the best for Easter weekend.
With the long weekend upon us, we won't be here tomorrow. But please join us for our next online chat next Tuesday, April 26th, when our guest will be Kitchener-Waterloo NDP candidate Bill Brown. Have a Happy Easter.
