The question on the minds of a million Canadians, Matt! And I'd love NOT to answer....because it's such a tough one. But since you asked, I won't duck the question. And my gut says, no. While the NDP will improve their standing in the House, I don't think they will form the Official Opposition.
The answer on young people is yes. We all saw the vote mobs. Those alone mean more young people voted this time than last. But it's still not enough young people.
To be truthful, I was really impressed with our local Pirate candidate, Steven Scott. I thought he conducted himself very well and was an interesting and effective part of this campaign. That said, the Pirate vote won't even register in this election.
58.8% is the number to beat. Shouldn't be too hard!
I don't think a vote for anyone is a "mess," Matt. As long as someone is voting for who or what they believe in, I'm all for it. I think that's what we call democracy.
Hear, hear Reg! You've got my vote for the online vote!
Sadly, Kerri-Ann....yes. I think it took a celebrity like Rick Mercer and a gimmick like a "vote mob" to engage and energize youth voters. This, to me, is a band-aid. I think some form of electoral reform, where a young voter really believes his or her vote means something, would be the biggest boost. I'm not sure what form that takes yet but I think we have to start exploring different ideas.
The thing that has driven me craziest in this election campaign is the notion that this vote was "unnecessary." And while it does cost us about $350-million, I just don't think you can put a price on democracy. This is our system, folks, for better or for worse.
So what got you engaged, Josi? Was it an issue? Was it a vote mob? Are you a poli-sci student?? :)
Hate them, Matt. I've said before and I'll say again -- don't tell me what someone else will NOT do for me....tell me what you WILL do! Simple as that. As for getting rid of them? No chance. Sadly, they work.
I like your thinking re: the Bloc, Reg. I wouldn't be upset if a separatist party was dealt a hefty blow in this election.
I'm stunned that the NDP polling numbers have held up so well. This is a monumental shift, in my opinion. Liberals have formed governments for about 3/4 of our nation's history. The party now appears to be a 3rd place party.
